你知道「撐竿跳」、「丟鉛球」的英文是什麼嗎？
現在就一起跟著 Jenny 和 Victor 一起看田徑比賽吧！
Jenny 跟 Victor 是奧運迷，而他們殷殷期盼四年一次的奧運終於要在東京舉辦了！而在今年七月之前他們要先好好預習一下奧運田徑項目…
Jenny: Oh my god Victor! I’m super excited! The Olympics is finally coming this year. I’ve been waiting for…. almost four years!
Jenny: 我的天啊 Victor！我超級興奮的！今年奧運終於要來了，我等了大概有…四年了！Victor: Me too. I’m really looking forward to the athletics.
Victor: 我也是，我真的期待田徑比賽。Jenny: What event are you looking forward to the most?
Jenny: 你最期待哪一個比賽項目？Victor: The men’s 200 meters for sure. I’m a big fan of Yang Chun-han, so I really hope that he makes it to Tokyo.
Victor: 200 公尺短跑是我最期待的，我是楊俊瀚的超級粉絲，所以我真的很希望他可以前進 2020 東京奧運。Jenny: Me too. Have you heard who else is competing at the Olympics?
Jenny: 我也希望，你知道台灣也有一個人要參加今年的奧運田徑比賽嗎？Victor: No? I must have missed the news.
Victor: 真的嗎？我想我漏掉消息了。Jenny: Cheng Chao-tsun is representing Taiwan in the javelin!
Jenny: 鄭兆村要代表台灣參加標槍比賽！Victor: Wow! What exciting news!
Victor: 哇！真是太令人興奮的消息了！
athletics (n.) 田徑
奧運比賽中有很多類型的運動比賽，田徑也是其中之一，而田徑的英文就是 athletics，這個字來自名詞 athlete (運動員；擅長運動的人)，注意田徑的英文恆用複數形。
My son is representing his school at the athletics competition in Taipei.
我的兒子要代表學校參加台北市田徑比賽。
event (n.) 比賽項目
運動比賽除了分成田徑、水上運動、球類運動等大項目之外，各大項目下亦可分成小項目，舉例來說，田徑下可分成短跑、丟鉛球等小項目，而小項目的英文就是 event。補充：event 這個字也有「盛事」的意思。
The first event of today’s athletics match is the women’s 100 meters.
今天田徑比賽中的第一個比賽項目是女子一百公尺。
javelin (n.) 標槍
你知道今年台灣有一人要前進 2020 東金奧運的標槍比賽嗎？就是鄭兆村啦！除了替他加油以外，你知道「標槍」的英文怎麼說嗎？標槍比賽的英文是 javelin，其讀音是 /ˈʤævələn/。
My favorite athletics event is the javelin.
我最喜歡的田徑項目是標槍。
之後，Jenny 跟 Victor 也討論到其他的田徑比賽項目…
Victor: I think pole vault is also exciting to watch. Every year, the athletes still manage to surprise me with their skill.
Victor: 我覺得撐竿跳也很好看，每年的參賽者都讓能讓我大吃一驚。Jenny: Agree, totally. But I still think decathlon and heptathlon are definitely the most difficult events.
Jenny: 認同！但是在所有的比賽項目中，我覺得十項全能比賽和七項全能比賽絕對是最困難的。Victor: What are those? I’ve never heard of them before.
Victor: 我從來沒聽過欸，妳可以解釋給我聽嗎？Jenny: Well, decathlon is for men and heptathlon is for women.
Jenny: 十項全能是男生的比賽，而七項全能是女生的。Victor: I see. Are there any other differences?
Victor: 了解，還有其他差別嗎？Jenny: Yes, decathlon has ten events, while heptathlon has seven.
Jenny: 有，男子十項全能比賽項目有十個，但女子七項全能項目只有七個。Victor: Wow! You are really an athletics expert!
Victor: 哇！你真的很了解田徑比賽！Jenny: You flatter me.
Jenny: 你過獎了。
pole vault (n.) 撐竿跳
田徑比賽項有一個項目是撐竿跳，而撐竿跳的英文就是 pole vault /ˈpol ˌvɑlt/，pole 的意思是「竿子」而 vault 則是「穹頂」，因為撐竿跳是用竿子撐起讓竿子成為拱狀，是不是很好記呢？。
Mary won gold in the pole vault for her school.
Mary 為他的學校贏得撐竿跳比賽的金牌。
decathlon (n.) 男子十項全能比賽
我們很常聽到的十項全能比賽英文應該怎麼說呢？就是 decathlon /dɪˈkæθlən/，字首 dec- 有「十；十分之一」的意思，而 athon 則為「持續時間很久的活動」之意 (例如馬拉松的英文 marathon)，合起來是「十項全能比賽」。注意這個字是指專業運動比賽中男子的十項全能比賽喔！女生的請看下一個單字解釋。
He’s been training hard for the decathlon.
他為了要參加男子十項全能比賽訓練得很勤。
heptathlon (n.) 女子七項全能比賽
說完男生的十項全能比賽之後，現在來介紹女生的七項全能比賽吧！在正規運動賽事中，女生的全能比賽只有七項，其英文是 heptathlon /hɛpˈtæθlən/，hepta- 這個字首為「七」的意思，athon 則為「持續時間很久的活動」之意，合起來是「七項全能比賽」。
Her goal is to qualify for the heptathlon at the Olympics.
她的目標就是參加奧運女子七項全能比賽。
