reopen (v.) 重新開放
字首 re- 有「再度；回到原狀況」的意思，而 reopen 便是指「重新開放，重新開始」的意思。常見字首為 re- 的單字還有 replay (重新播放)、reform (重組)、reestablish (重新建立) 等。
Everyone is wondering when the campuses will reopen.
大家都在想，校園何時會重新開放。When does the school reopen? Is it Sep. 1?
學校什麼時候開始上課？是九月一號嗎？
local (n.) 當地居民
local 可以當作名詞或形容詞使用，在此當作名詞使用，意思是「當地居民，本地人」，而當成形容詞時，則可指「當地的，地方性的」之意。
When I was lost in the forest, it was a local who came to my rescue.
當我在森林裡迷路時，是一名當地人救了我的。After weeks of warnings, the dreaded news came that the local bank had been robbed and five people injured.
經過了好幾週的警告後，有一則可怕的新聞，地方的銀行被搶，而且有五人受傷。
international travel (n.) 國際旅行
international 為形容詞，意思是「國際間的，國際性的」，而 international travel 就是指在國與國之間旅行，也就是「國際旅行」之意，通常就是指搭飛機往來各國。
With the outbreak of the pandemic, many countries are now banning international travels.
隨著疫情的爆發，許多國家都禁止了國際旅行。Is international travel still banned in Taiwan?
台灣仍然有國際旅遊禁令嗎？
enforce (v.) 實施
字首 en- 有「使；加諸」的意思，而 force 有「強迫，迫使」之意，en- + force 形成動詞 enforce，有強制地「實施，執行」之意。
The police enforced the law and arrested Christine on fraud charges.
該警察執法，並因詐欺起訴逮捕了 Christine。You should let your kids make up their own minds. It’s not right to enforce your beliefs on them.
你應該要讓孩子自己作主，這樣把自己的信念強加在孩子身上是不對的。
compulsory (adj.) 強制的
形容詞 compulsory 的唸法為 /kǝmˈpʌlsǝrɪ/，意思是「強制的，強迫的」，近義詞為 required。另外 compulsory 也有「義務的；必修的」之意。
Wearing a seatbelt while driving is compulsory.
開車時強制要繫安全帶。English is compulsory for all senior high school students in Taiwan.
台灣高中生都要修英文課。
overnight (adv.) 一夜間 (adj.) 一夜間的
overnight 可以當作形容詞或副詞來使用，意思指「一夜間 (的)，突然」。另外 overnight 也可以直接用來指「整夜，通宵」。
The effects of the pandemic won’t just evaporate overnight. We’ll need to work together to deal with the fallout.
疫情造成的影響不會一夜間就消失，我們得合作對抗這個狀況。Do you want to stay overnight? I could use the company.
你今天想留下來過夜嗎？我需要一點陪伴。
inconclusive (adj.) 無定論的
形容詞 conclusive 的意思是「決定性的，確實的」，如：clonclusive proof (確證)。conclusive 前方加上否定字首 in- 便會成為形容詞 inconclusive，意思是「無定論的，不確定的」。
The test results were inconclusive. The doctor said I might have to stay here for another night until they figure out what’s wrong with me.
檢驗結果仍然沒有定論，醫生說我可能得再多留一個晚上看看我到底是怎麼了。It is a waste of time to have an inconclusive argument.
一場無結論的爭吵很浪費時間。
drive-in theater (n.) 汽車電影院
drive-in 的意思是「(銀行、電影院、餐館等) 免下車的」，而 theater 的意思是「戲院」。兩者合起來就是 drive-in theater，意思為「汽車電影院」。汽車電影院是一種戶外設計的電影院，本質上就是一座大停車場，大家開車入場，在車上觀賞大螢幕的電影。注意可不要和速食店的得來速 (drive-thru) 搞混唷！
What are the major differences between drive-in theaters and traditional theaters?
汽車電影院與一般電影院有什麼顯著的差別？Hey, don’t be mad. Let’s go to the drive-in theater and watch a movie.

raise a question (phr.) 提出問題
動詞 raise 在此當作「提出，發出」的意思，因此 raise a question 就是指「提出問題」，等於 bring up a question。其他相關的片語還有 raise a request (提出要求)、raise a toast (乾杯)。
Can I raise a question? How are you going to solve the problem of wastage on this project?
我可以問個問題嗎？你們會怎麼解決這個專案浪費的問題？I raised a request with the manager for more funding for the project.
我向經理提出增加這個專案資金的要求。
studio (n.) 製片廠
studio 有許多意思，在此當成「電影製片廠；電影攝影棚」來使用。studio 用在不同職業就有不同意思，如它可以當作畫家的「工作室，畫室」，舞蹈老師的「練舞室」或是攝影師的「攝影室；照相館」等。
Jennifer just signed a development deal with a top Hollywood studio.
Jennifer 剛剛和好萊塢一間頂尖的製片廠簽了發展協議。Come to my studio when you are free and you can have a look at my paintings yourself.

franchise (n.) 系列電影
franchise 最常見的意思是「經銷權；公民權」，但在此，franchise 指的是那些如玩命關頭、飢餓遊戲等擁有衍伸續作的「系列電影」。
I think the movies in the Fast and Furious franchise are awful, yet somehow they are a massive financial success.
我覺得《玩命關頭》系列電影很糟糕，但是不知道怎麼的就是很賣座。Brett’s mom was excited when he told her he was opening a convenience store franchise, only to be disappointed she found out it was an OK Mart.
Brett 的媽媽在他跟她說他要開一間連鎖便利商店的時候很興奮，但是發現是 OK 超商之後就很失望。
tropical storm (n.) 熱帶風暴
形容詞 tropical 的意思是「熱帶的」，而名詞 storm 則是指「風暴」，兩者合一便成為名詞 tropical storm「熱帶風暴」，是熱帶氣旋的泛稱。在北大西洋、北太平洋中部和東北太平洋，稱為「颶風」，其英文為 hurricane；在台灣稱之為「颱風」，而在南太平洋及印度洋則之之為「氣旋」，英文為 cyclone。
A tropical storm is set to hit the east coast.
一個熱帶風暴即將襲擊東岸。I hope this tropical storm won’t bring too much damage to our village.
