lead to (phr.) 導致
動詞 lead 有許多意思，如「引導；領導；導致；領先」等，而 lead 在搭配不同的介系詞時，更延伸出了許多不同的片語，如 lead to 就是「導致；通到 (某處)」的意思，同義片語還有 contrubute to、result in。其他與 lead 相關的片語還有 follow sb’s lead (效法某人)、lead in (引進)、lead out (引出)。
You should quit smoking. Do you know it can lead to lung cancer?
你該戒煙了，你知道抽菸會導致肺癌嗎？This road leads to the casino.
這條路可以通到賭場。
repeatedly (adv.) 再三地
動詞 repeat 為「重複」的意思，而 repeatedly 為副詞形態，意思為「再三地；一再地」。意思相近的詞有 frequently、often。
The kids were repeatedly warned to be quiet.
這群孩子再三地被警告安靜點。Angie is often late for work.
Angie 經常上班遲到。
debate (n.) 爭論；辯論
debate 在此作為名詞使用，意思是「爭論；辯論」。這個字也可以當作動詞，意思同樣為「討論；爭論」，也有「思考；盤算」的意思，其後可接介系詞 over 再接受詞。
The debate over whether or not global warming is causing forest fires has spread throughout the whole country.
有關全球暖化是否會造成森林大火的爭議已經蔓延整個國家。We debated over whether we should join the party or not.
我們在思考要不要參加派對。
mutate (v.) 突變
mutate 為動詞，意思是指遺傳物質等「產生突變，變化」。
The virus has mutated and has become immune to the vaccine.
該病毒已經突變，變得對疫苗免疫。We need to observe these viruses closely since, they could mutate at any second.
我們得仔細觀察這些病毒，因為它們隨時都可能會突變。
relic (n.) 遺跡
名詞 relic 唸法為 /ˈrɛlɪk/，意思是「遺跡，廢墟」，也有「遺物，遺俗」之意。另外 sacred relic 則有「聖物」的意思。
The tunnel you see here is a relic from 200 years ago.
你現在看到的這個隧道是 200 年前的遺跡。These ancient relics should be properly preserved by the government.
政府應該好好保存這個古建築遺跡。
disused (adj.) 廢棄的
use 有「使用」的意思，加上否定字首 dis- 便成為形容詞 disused，表「廢棄的，不使用的」之意，通常置於名詞前作前位修飾。
There is a party at the disused warehouse. It is a bit creepy.
有一個派對在廢棄倉庫舉行，感覺有點詭異。Adults always tell the children not to go into the disused mine because it is dangerous.
大人要小孩不要去廢棄礦坑，因為很危險。
lift (n.) 電梯
lift 最常見的使用方式為當作動詞，表「舉起，抬起」或是 「解除 (封鎖)」之意。但在此處 lift 為名詞，「電梯」的意思。請注意，lift 作為電梯為英式英文的用法，在美式英文中電梯則寫作 elevator。
I am tired, so I am going to take the lift.
我累了，所以我要搭電梯。The government lifted the ban on e-cigarettes.
政府解除了電子煙的禁令。
shelter (v.) 庇護 (n.) 避難所
shelter 當動詞使用時，有「庇護，避難，保護」的意思，當名詞時則有「避難所，庇護所」之意，如 air-raid shelter 就是指「防空洞」。
We are sheltering from the thunderstorm in a convenience store. I hope it will end very soon.
我們在一間便利商店躲避暴風雨，希望它趕快結束。Jason opened an animal shelter to save stray dogs and cats.
Jason 開了一間動物收容所，來收容那些流浪狗狗貓貓。
in the foreseable future (phr.) 不久的將來
foresee 是動詞「預見，預知」的意思，加上字尾 -able 成為形容詞 foreseeable，意思是「可預見的」。而片語 in the foreseeable future 的意思則是指「可預見的將來，不久的將來」之意。
I will be here for the foreseeable future. If you need anything, just come here.
我最近應該都會在這，如果你需要任何東西就來找我吧。My girlfriend asked me if there was any point in the foreseeable future that I would want to get a cat.
我女友問我是否想在不久的將來養隻貓。
excavate (v.) 開鑿
excavate /ˈɛkskəˌvet/ 為動詞，意思是「開鑿，挖掘」，excavate 的名詞形態為 excavation，也有「挖掘，開鑿」的意思，另也可指「開鑿的洞穴；(挖掘出的) 文物」。
The workers excavated a huge tunnel for the future subway.
工人為之後的地下鐵挖了一個大隧道。The team spent ten years on the excavation of this tomb.
團隊花了十年開鑿這個墓穴。
pilot (adj.) 試驗性的
pilot 在此當形容詞使用，意思是「試驗性的」，如：pilot scheme (實驗性計畫)。另外 pilot 也很常作為名詞使用，有「駕駛員；試播節目」的意思。
I hope we can attain success with this pilot project, that way I can get a promotion.
我希望這個試驗計畫可以取得成功，這樣我才能得到升職。A bird hit the plane and damaged the engine. The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on the water.
一隻鳥撞上飛機並毀損了引擎，駕駛員被迫在海上迫降。
program (v.) 為…設計程式
program 在此作為動詞使用，有「為 (電腦等) 設計程式」或是「為…安排節目/制定計劃」的意思。program 也常常作為名詞使用，有「節目；課程」等意思。
I took a computer course this semester. The professor taught us how to program a computer.
我這學期選了一堂電腦課，教授教我們如何寫程式。I am considering applying for an MBA program. It is time for me to think about my future.
我在考慮要申請 MBA，是該想想未來的時候了。
