相信大家都對台灣近日發生的錢櫃火災略知一二，
火災隨時都有可能發生，
我們都知道發生火災時要壓低身體匍匐前進，
但是平常的預防也是相當重要，
平時就備有防災知識並備好滅火器才是明智之舉。
今天就來帶大家看看國外英文文章，
了解火災發生時絕對不能做的十件事也來學學「匍匐前進」的英文怎麼說！

火災的可怕之處大家都知道，在文章開始之前，大家可以先看看 2019年發生的澳洲野火所造成的傷害。

那麼進入正題，首先大家最常犯的錯誤就是在尚未確認其他逃生路線時，就是急著開門。
If fire is on the other side of a door preventing you from escaping, one of the worst things you can do is open the door. Fires need oxygen to sustain itself and opening the door provides oxygen flow [(which]) exposes people to dangerous heat levels and toxic carbon-monoxide gas. Rather than immediately flinging open a door, first check for alternative exits into rooms where the flames have not yet spread or try to escape through a window if it is safe to do so.
(如果火勢在門口的對側且阻礙你逃生，那麼你能做的最糟的事之一就是開門。火需要氧氣來繼續燃燒，開門就會提供氧氣助燃，而後置你於危險的高溫和有毒的一氧化碳中。因此，要先確認是否有其他火焰尚未蔓延的出口，或者在安全的情況下嘗試從窗戶逃出。)
prevent
prevent 為動詞，意思是「防止，阻礙」，而最常見的用法是 prevent sb. from doing sth.，意思就是「阻礙某人做某件事」。
Harry’s injury prevented him from playing in the game.
Harry 的傷勢使他無法參加比賽。This cream helps prevent sunburn.
這個乳霜可以防止曬傷。
fling
fling 為動詞，意思是「猛地做…」而它也有「猛擲，猛投」的意思。此單字動名詞同形，當作名詞時表示「短暫的歡樂時光」。注意其動詞三態為 fling-flung-flung。
The window was flung open widely by the wind.
風把窗戶猛然打開了。
之後文章說到如果你一定得把門打開，請記得關上它。
“If you need to escape through an open door, remember to close the door behind you so that oxygen from other rooms doesn’t further fuel the fire,” said Kerber. New York City firefighter Christopher Doyle also told INSIDER that closing doors as you leave a burning area can make a huge difference for arriving firefighters.
(如果你一定要從門逃生，切記要關上它，以防止其他房間中的氧氣幫助火勢燃燒。紐約消防隊的 Christopher Doyle 也告訴 INSIDER 離開火區前有沒有把門關上對之後抵達的消防人員會有很大的影響。)
fuel
fuel 在此為動詞，意思是「為…添加燃料；激起」，當作名詞時意思是「燃料」。
This car can be fuelled by ethanol.
這輛車可以用乙醇來當作燃料。
文章第三段說到絕對不要為了提供受困者氧氣，而打破窗戶，你能做的就是趕緊通報相關單位，至於為什麼呢？讓我們往下看：
“In a house fire, don’t break out the windows thinking you might give the trapped occupants more air — it only increases the fire’s development and intensity”. The best thing you can do for anyone inside a burning structure is to immediately call emergency services and be ready to tell firefighters the number of and location of any people who may be trapped inside.
(房屋著火時，不要自認為能提供受困者氧氣就打開窗戶，因為這樣只會加劇火勢的燃燒與嚴重性。你最該做的就是立刻打電話給緊急服務人員，並準備好告訴消防員可能被困在裡面的人數和位置。)
occupant
occupant 為名詞，意思是「居住者；佔有者」，是由動詞 occupy 衍生而來，此單字本身就有「佔據，佔有」的意思。
The boy is the only occupant in this apartment.
這位男孩是這棟公寓唯一的住戶。
第四件你不該做的事就是嘗試移動著火的鍋具。
“For cooking fires, do not take a flaming pan from the stove and run outside to discard the pan. This is very common behavior and usually causes the fire to spread by spilling burning grease.” Instead, place a lid or metal cookie sheet over the pan and turn off the heat source.
(應對著火的鍋具，不要將著火的平底鍋從火爐移開並跑到外面把它丟棄。這是最常見的行為，而這常會導致溢出的油脂使火勢蔓延。你該做的事情是蓋上鍋蓋或是金屬烤盤，然後關閉熱源。)
discard
discard 意思是「丟棄，拋棄」。此單字動名詞同形，當作名詞使用時，表示「被拋棄的人事物」。
People shouldn’t discard their litter on the street.
人們不該把垃圾亂丟在街上。
下一段說到當你衣服著火時，不要四處亂跑。
…as moving around only fans the flames and can cause the fire to spread more rapidly across your clothing. Instead, stop moving, drop to the ground, and repeatedly roll over the flaming area until it is extinguished.
(四處逃竄只會煽動火焰，且可能使火勢更迅速蔓延至全身的衣物上。你應該做的待在原地不動、躺在地上，將衣物已著火的部位在地上重複滾動直到熄滅。)
rapidly
rapidly 為副詞，意思是「快速地，迅速地」。近義詞為 quickly。
The world is changing rapidly.
這個世界瞬息萬變。
接下來提到當火災發生時，不要經過著火的房間。
If you try to stand in a burning room without protection, the air you breathe may burn your lungs and your clothes may melt onto your skin. If there is a lot of smoke around you as you try to escape, stay as low to the ground as you can. If possible, drop to the floor and quickly crawl toward an exit.
(如果你在毫無保護的情況下，想要在燃燒中的房間站起來，那麼你吸進去的空氣可能會灼傷你的肺，且衣物可能會融化到你的皮膚上。當你要逃出時，四周濃煙密佈，因此要盡可能地與地面越近越好，如果可以的話，盡量趴在地上並快速地爬向出口。)
crawl
crawl 意思是「爬行，匍匐前進」，另外也有「巴結，討好」的意思。此單字動名詞同形，當作名詞使用時有「爬行」的意思。
Meggie’s child has just learned to crawl.
Meggie 的小孩剛學會爬。
文章也說到當火災發生時，不要使用電梯。
During a fire, elevators can malfunction, be disabled, and experience electrical issues. Plus, they can get stuck or even open up on the floor where the fire is occurring.
(發生火災時，電梯可能會故障，失靈和出現電力問題。此外，它們也可能會卡住或甚至在著火的樓層開門。)
malfunction
malfunction 為動詞，意思是「故障，運轉不正常」，此單字也可作名詞使用，意思是「失靈，故障」。
The high temperature may cause the equipment to malfunction.
高溫可能會導致這個裝置出現問題。Can you help me find out the source of the computer malfunction?
你可以幫我找出這部電腦故障的地方嗎？
下一點提到當使用滅火器時，不要對準火焰的中間或是上方。
When using a fire extinguisher, pull the pin, aim at the base of the flames, squeeze the trigger, and sweep from side to side. Think of it like trying to kill a weed by snipping the top; if you don’t attack it at the roots, it will just grow back.
(使用滅火器時，拉插銷，對準火焰底部，壓握把，然後向火源左右移動噴灑。把這想成是想藉由剪掉頂端來除雜草；不從根部處理它，否則它還是會重新生長的。)
fire extinguisher
「滅火器」的英文為 fire extinguisher，extinguisher 這個字由動詞 extinguish (撲滅) 衍生而來。補充，表示「撲滅」的動詞除了 extinguish 之外，也可以用動詞片語 put out。
Having a fire extinguisher in or outside your home is a necessity.
在你家中或是家門外配備一個滅火器是必須的。
aim
aim 為動詞，意思是「使瞄準」，例如：aim sth. at sb. (使某物針對某人；使某物瞄準某人)。
The robber aimed his gun at the man.
搶匪持槍瞄準該名男子。
文章也說到不要想一個人對抗烈火。
“Do not attempt to put the fire out yourself. Each second increases your likelihood of smoke inhalation. Stay low and leave the fire area as quickly as possible,” Doyle told INSIDER.
(Doyle 告訴 INSIDER：「不要試圖自行撲滅大火，因為你每分每秒都在增加你吸入煙霧的可能性，所以要保持低姿勢並盡快逃離火區。」)
attempt
attempt 動名詞同形，意思是「嘗試，企圖」，例如：attempt to do sth.。
I will attempts to finish the project before May.
我會試著在五月之前完成這項計畫。
最後一點也是很常見的錯誤，那就是衝進火場救人，這麼做不僅可能救不出人，連你自己都可能葬身火場。
It can take mere seconds for someone to become overwhelmed by smoke or heat and lose consciousness and you put yourself at risk for those things when you go back inside of a burning building.
(一個人僅需幾秒就能因為濃煙或熱能而失去意識，而這些都是你闖入燃燒中的建築物時會遇上的危險。)
mere
mere 為形容詞，意思是「只不過，僅僅」，後面需接名詞。較常見的是此單字的副詞形態，merely 為副詞，意同於 only。
Although it’s a mere 200 meters from my house to the convenience store, I’m still too lazy to go out.
儘管我家到便利商店僅距離 200 公尺，我還是懶得出門。
