the big picture (n.) 局勢
the big picture 或 the bigger picture 直譯的意思為「大圖」，在此指的是「整體的局勢」。
When it comes to international relations, you have to look at the big picture, rather than individual events.
當講到國際關係，你得看全面局勢，而不是一些單一的事件。Let’s just focus on the big picture for now. Don’t worry too much about the details.
我們現在就專注在整體局勢就好，不要太擔心一些細節。
layoff (n.) 解僱
layoff 為名詞，意思是「解僱」，也可以用來指「停工期，歇工期」，在足球方面則也有「喂球」的意思。若當作動詞片語使用，也可以用 lay sb. off 的句型。
The recent pandemic caused an economic crisis, and led to massive layoffs.
最近的疫情造成經濟危機，更導致了許多人被解僱。Many workers are on strike, over what they say are unreasonable layoffs.
許多工人正在抗議公司無理的解僱。
gross domestic product (n.) 國內生產毛額
形容詞 gross 有「總的」之意，domestic 指「國內的」，而 product 則是指「產量；結果」，gross domestic product 就是指人們常見的 GDP，「國內生產毛額」之意。
Because of the pandemic, many economists predict that this year the United States’ GDP will drop significantly.
因為大流行疫情，許多經濟學家預測美國今年的 GDP 會大幅下降。GDP is an abbreviation for gross domestic product.
GDP 是國內生產毛額的縮寫。
recession (n.) (經濟的) 衰退
名詞 recession 常用來指經濟的「衰退；衰退期」，另外也有「後退；凹處」之意。
My parents’ factory closed down during the recession.
我父母的工廠在經濟衰退時期關閉了。Everyone is struggling to get by during this recession.
在經濟衰退時期，大家都在掙扎著如何生存。
evaporate (v.) 使消失；使蒸發
evaporate 最常見的意思是「(使) 蒸發」但在此是指「(使) 消失」的意思。作「消失」時，同義詞有 disappear、go away 與 vanish。
The effects of the pandemic won’t just evaporate overnight. We’ll need to work together to deal with the fallout.
疫情造成的影響不會一夜間就消失，我們得合作對抗這個狀況。The weather is really hot today. That pool of water over there in the sun evaporated in only five minutes.
今天天氣很熱，那一攤水在太陽下五分鐘就蒸發了。
curtail (v.) 削減
動詞 curtail 的意思是「縮減，削減；縮短」，常見搭配有：curtail the holidays/spendings (縮減假期/花費)。
The government hopes to curtail spending on health care.
政府想要縮減健保上的花費。You should curtail your speech. You’ve only got ten minutes.
你該縮短演講稿，因為你只有十分鐘。
the Great Depression (n.) 經濟大蕭條
the Great Depression 為「經濟大蕭條」之意，是指 1929 年至 1933 年之間全球性的經濟大衰退、第二次世界大戰前最為嚴重的世界性經濟衰退。據維基百科，the Great Depression 經濟大蕭條是二十世紀持續時間最長、影響最廣、強度最大的經濟衰退。
My grandpa experienced the Great Depression. He said it was something that he never wanted to experience again.
我爺爺經歷過經濟大蕭條，他說那是這輩子不會想再經歷一次的事件。The Great Depression caused an economic crisis in many countries.
經濟大蕭條在許多國家都造成經濟危機。
desolate (adj.) 荒蕪的，無人煙的
desolate 在此部影片裡作形容詞使用，但這個字其實也可作動詞使用，有「使荒蕪；使孤寂」的意思。另一個長相相似的字 isolate，則有「孤立，隔離」之意。
There are no houses for miles around in this desolate desert.
在這座荒蕪的沙漠裡，幾英里之內都看不到房子。The desolate island is unable to support human life.
這荒蕪的小島無法使人存活。
desert (n.) 沙漠
desert /ˈdɛzɚt/ 為「沙漠」之意，也能作形容詞使用，意思是「沙漠的；荒蕪的」。另外，請不要和 dessert /dɪˈzɚt/ (甜點) 搞混了，兩字只有一個 s 之差，且發音也不同。
I don’t think I could ever live in the desert. It’s too hot, and there’s far too much sand.
我不認為我可以適應在沙漠的生活，實在是太熱了，而且沙子太多了。No plants can be grown in that desert.
在那個荒蕪的地區，沒有植物可以生存。
dune (n.) 沙丘
dune 一字指的是風吹積而成的「沙丘」，另外 knob 也有「圓丘，小山」的意思。
The manager highly recommended the dune dashing. I am considering signing up for it for next week.
經理強烈推薦我去飆沙，我在考慮報名下週的活動。They climbed up to the dune and raced down to see who was the fastest.
他們爬上沙丘再賽跑下來看誰最快。
delivery (n.) 投遞
delivery 在此指「投遞，傳送，交貨」，但它還有許多意思，如「分娩；演講的姿態」等。另外在餐廳英文中，delivery 也有「外送」的意思。
Todd bought a gift for Bojack, but delivery was delayed because of the typhoon.
Todd 買了禮物要送 Bojack，但包裹因為颱風而延誤了。My wife had a difficult delivery and was in hospital for several months. Fortunately, the baby was fine.
我妻子因難產而住院了好幾個月，但不幸中的萬幸是，孩子沒事。
sled (n.) 雪橇
sled 除了當名詞表示「雪橇」使用之外，也可當作動詞表示「用雪橇運；乘坐雪橇」來使用。
It’s common to see dog sleds in Alaska.
狗拉的雪橇在阿拉斯加很常見。Chandler took Monica sledding during their honeymoon in Canada.
Chandler 帶 Monica 去加拿大度蜜月玩雪橇。
