drive-thru (n.) 得來速
drive-thru 其實是非正式的寫法，正式寫法為 drive-through，意思就是「得來速」。另外相關的字還有 take-out (外帶)、delivery (外送)、carry-out (外帶)。
McDonald’s is a famous drive-thru restaurant.
麥當勞是有名的得來速餐廳。We ordered some Chinese takeout; do you wanna have some?
我們叫了一些中餐外帶，你要吃一點嗎？
call off (phr.) 取消
call off 為動詞片語，意思是「取消」，近義詞有 cancel、recall。另外 call off 也可以指「喊走」某物、某人。
Monica called off the wedding because she found out Chandler had been cheating on her.
Monica 取消的婚禮，因為她發現 Chandler 一直背著她外遇。The host called off the party because half of the guests did not show up.
派對主人取消了派對，因為一半的人沒有出現。
immunity (n.) 免疫力
這個名詞指的是「免疫力」通常搭配介系詞 agianst 或 to，如：immunity against typhoid (對傷寒的免疫力)。另外 immunity 也可以用來指稱「豁免權；免除」的意思。
Our immunity changes with the seasons. We are more likely to catch a cold in winter.
人類的免疫力會隨著季節改變，我們在冬天較容易感冒。The prosecutor offered Lisa immunity if she testified against her boss.
地方檢察官提供 Lisa 豁免權，若她願意供出她的老闆。
panic buying (n.) 搶購
panic 為名詞「恐慌之意」，panic + buying 則是指因害怕不好的事即將發生而出現的「恐慌性購物」，其實也就是大家俗稱的「搶購」。
The government reassured the people that supplies were plentiful and that there was no need for panic buying.
政府保證人民我們資源足夠，不需要搶購物資。The rumors online caused panic buying in many states.
網路上的謠言使得許多州發生搶購事件。
shortage (n.) 短缺
名詞 shortage 的意思是「短缺，缺少，匱乏」，而反義詞 abundance 則是指「豐富，充足」。我們也可以用 a lack of sth. 來表示「缺少某物」。
The manufacturer said there would be a major shortage of toys this Christmas due to a lack of raw materials.
玩具製造商表示，由於缺乏原料，今年聖誕節將會有玩具短缺的現象發生。There is a shortage of iron in this country, so they have to import it from other countries.
這個國家缺鐵，所以他們必須從別的國家進口。
cut off (phr.) 切斷
動詞片語 cut off 在此指的是「中斷，切斷（電力、物資供應等）」，另外 cut off 還有「切除；使死亡」之意。其他與 cut 有關的片語還有 cut out (刪去)、cut in (插話)、cut down (削減)。
Ross forgot to pay his bill and so his electricity was cut off.
Ross 忘記繳電費，所以電力被切斷了。Cutting off your enemy’s supplies is a good way to win a battle.
贏得一場戰役的最好辦法，就是切斷敵方的物資支援。
ban (v.) 禁止 (n.) 禁令
ban 這個字動名詞同形，作動詞時有「禁止，取締」的意思，尤其是指官方的禁止，在古代時也有「詛咒」之意。而當作名詞時，ban 則有「禁止；禁令；禁忌」的意思。
China’s government has banned many books about democracy.
中國政府禁了很多關於民主的書籍。There is a ban on short skirts in my school.
我們學校禁止穿短裙。
meanwhile (n./adv.) 同時
meanwhile 可當名詞或副詞使用，意思為「其間，同時」。當名詞時常見搭配為 in the meanwhile (在此同時)。
My mom is going to Berlin on vacation. Meanwhile, I am going to visit my relatives in Paris.
我媽要去柏林度假，在這期間我會去拜訪我巴黎的親戚。Those two couldn’t be any more different. Ross is studying hard for the exam, meanwhile Rachel is taking a nap.
那兩個人超不像。Ross 正為考試努力讀書著，在此同時，Rachel 正在睡覺。
predator (n.) 狩獵者
predator 是指像是狼、獅子一般的「捕食性動物」。另一個意思是「尾隨作案者」，指的是蓄意跟蹤被害人而犯案的人。prey 則是被獵捕的「獵物」。
As a predator, lions are at the top of the food chain in many environments.
身為捕食性動物，獅子在很多環境中都位居食物鏈的頂端。In court, he was accused of being a sexual predator who raped more than 20 women.
在法庭上，他被控是個尾隨作案的色魔，已經強暴了超過二十名女性。
amber (n.) 琥珀
這個字為「琥珀」的意思，根據維基百科，琥珀是松科松屬植物的樹脂化石，並非樹的汁液，其狀態透明似水晶，色澤如瑪瑙。另外 amber 也可以指「琥珀色；黃褐色」的顏色。amber 也可作為形容詞使用，意思是「琥珀似的；琥珀色的」。
The paleontologist found an insect fossil inside some amber.
那名古生物學家在琥珀中發現一些昆蟲化石。Chandler got Monica an amber necklace as a gift for their tenth wedding anniversary.
Chandler 送給 Monica 一條琥珀項鍊作為結婚十週年禮物。
ancient (adj.) 古代的
ancient 這個字最常見的意思是「古代的」，另外也可以用來指東西「非常老舊的」。
The ancient relics should be properly preserved by the government.
政府應該好好保存這個古建築遺跡。I am fascinated by ancient Mayan civilization.
我對瑪雅的古文明感到驚奇。
fortnight (n.) 兩週
fort 本身的意思是「堡壘，要塞」，但 fortnight 指的是「兩星期，兩週，十四日」。副詞 fortnightly 則是指「兩週一次地」。此為英式用法。
Jack is in a long-distance relationship with his girlfriend and they only see each other once a fortnight.
Jack 和他女友是遠距離戀愛，兩週才見一次面。Rachel and Ross spent a fortnight in Japan on their honeymoon.
Rachel 與 Ross 在日本待了兩週當蜜月旅行。
