Hannah: Have you heard the saying: “Freedom of expression is like the air we breathe, we don’t feel it until people take it away from us” before? It really made me think

Cara: I feel you. We tend to take freedom for granted.
Cara:

Rose: Yeah. We’re lucky to live in a place where we can think and say what we want. Governments and regimes in many places around the world suppress freedom of speech.

Hannah: Why did they do that? I thought rights like freedom of speech were meant to be universal?
Hannah:

Rose: If an authority imposes restrictions on freedom of speech and freedom of the press, they can shape citizens’ thinking. This makes it easier for them to control people and stay in power.

Cara: Right. Without freedom, there is no truth…
Cara:

Rose: In addition, if there’s no freedom, it is difficult for people to stop government tyranny.
Rose:

Hannah: And that’s why we have a constitution—to protect our basic freedoms.
Hannah:

take sth. for granted (phr.)

Remember to thank others when they help you out. You shouldn’t take others’ kindness for granted!

tyranny (n.)

Following the military coup, citizens have lived in the fear of the tyranny of the new regime, with many being arrested just for expressing their opinion publicly.

freedom of speech (n.)

speech 有「演講;說話」的意思,因此「言論自由」就是 freedom of speech;而 「新聞、出版自由」則為 freedom of the press,the press 是指「報刊、新聞媒體」,注意一定要加上定冠詞 the。其他形式的自由如:freedom of religion (宗教自由)、freedom of assembly (集會自由)、freedom of association (結社自由)。

Freedom of speech means having the right to express one’s opinions without fear of persecution.

constitution (n.)

Many countries have a constitution that protects the fundamental rights of its citizens.

Cara: During the martial law period in Taiwan, public assembly was not allowed. Thankfully, that’s over now.
Cara:

Rose: But now there are some countries that exercise even greater control over their citizens using technology.
Rose:

Cara: I know. I think the most notorious example of this is Internet censorship in China.
Cara:

Hannah: Internet censorship? What does it mean by that exactly?
Hanh:

Rose: Internet censorship is when sensitive words, phrases, and even pictures on the Internet are blocked by the government.

Hanh: Aha! No wonder during the outbreak of COVID-19 and during the anti-extradition treaty protests in Hong Kong my Chinese friends only received certain information that was very different to what was being reported here.

Cara: Even worse, they don’t have freedom of religion there. Many are persecuted just for practicing their faith.

Hannah: That is really sobering. It makes me cherish the freedom we enjoy even more.

martial law (n.)

The government declared martial law in response to the protests.

assembly (n.)

This religious group holds an assembly every Saturday.

censorship (n.)

After the outbreak of war, the dictator imposed strict censorship on all fronts.

block (v.)

This app can block inappropriate websites so that your children can’t access them.

Give me liberty or give me death.
