coronavirus (n.) 冠狀病毒
這次武漢肺炎讓大家一定要學會這個單字！武漢肺炎就是 novel coronavirus (新型冠狀病毒)。corona 本身是「日冕；(人體) 冠狀部位」的意思，有個啤酒的品牌就叫作 Corona。
The Wuhan coronavirus epidemic has reminded people of SARS.
武漢肺炎已經變成流行傳染病，不禁讓人想起 SARS。MERS is caused by a kind of coronavirus originally found in bats.
MERS 是由一種從蝙蝠身上而來的冠狀病毒所致。
come down with sth. (phr.) 患上…，染上…
這個片語通常指比較輕微的疾病。值得注意的是，若把介系詞 with 換成 on，變成 come down on sb.，即為「嚴厲懲罰某人；斥責某人」之意。
After I coughed, everyone started staring at me thinking I had the coronavirus, when in fact I’d just come down with the cold.
我咳嗽的時候大家都看著我，認為我感染了冠狀病毒，但其實我只是小感冒而已。The boy came down with chickenpox at the end of the holidays.
這個小男孩在假期快結束時得到了水痘。
correspondent (n.) 特派記者；寫信人
此字來自動詞 correspond，「相稱；相當；通信」的意思，correspond with sth. 表「與…相稱」，correspond with sb. 表「與某人通信」。
The girl volunteered to be a war correspondent.
這位女孩自願當戰地記者。The witness’ testimony corresponds with that of the accused’s, so I suspect he is not guilty.
目擊者的證詞與嫌疑犯相符，因此我認為這個嫌疑犯無罪。
untouched (adj.) 未改變的；原封不動的
untouched 表示「原封不動的」，是過去分詞當形容詞的例子。值得注意的是，touched 意思是「感動的；感激的」，而 untouchable 則表示「無法企及；無法擊敗的；無法改變的」。
Sandy must be on a diet. She left her dinner untouched.
Sandy 在節食中，因為她的晚餐還好好地放在托盤上。The president is considered untouchable due to support from the military.
該國家已到了無法被擊敗的地步，因為其軍事武力過於強大。
spot (v.) 看見；注意到
spot 當動詞時通常指因為很仔細注意才會看到，而 see 比較像是剛好發現而已。spot 也能當名詞，表「斑點；圓點；場所」的意思，而 on the spot 是 「在現場；當場」的意思。
The police officer spotted the robber and caught him in the act.
警察看見該名搶匪，並將他逮個正著。The ambulance crew provided first aid on the spot following the car crash.
救護車在車禍發生後立馬抵達現場。
produce (n.) 農產品
produce 當動詞是「生產；製造；引起」的意思，發音為 /prəˈdus/，重音在第二個音節，而當名詞時，意思為「農產品」，發音則是 /ˈprɑdus/，重音在第一個音節。
Seasonal produce is not only fresher, but also cheaper.
當季農產品不僅更新鮮，還更便宜。Taiwan produces a great deal of fruit for export.
台灣生產許多水果以供外銷。
outbreak (n.) 爆發，突然發生
此字由動詞片語 break out 衍伸而來，特別指疾病、危險或不愉快的事情爆發，與 burst 同義。像是這次的「武漢肺炎的爆發」英文就可以用 Wuhan coronavirus outbreak 表示。
An outbreak of food poisoning has triggered panic throughout country.
食物中毒的爆發引起該國家的混亂。The outbreak of war has led to heavy casualties.
戰爭的爆發造成許多傷亡。
go south (phr.) 走下坡；變差
go south 是「往南走」？其實是因為南方一般朝下，所以引申為「走下坡」的意思。
His cosmetic surgery looked okay at first, but things rapidly went south once his nose started to melt.
他的整形手術失敗了，所以現在他的臉慘不忍睹。If things go south, don’t hold me responsible.
如果事情搞砸了，我不會負起責任的。
benchmark (n.) 基準；標準點
此字可以分成兩個部分來看：bench 是「板凳」，mark 表示「記號」，而在板凳上作記號，就以此當作「基準」。set a benchmark 即是「立下標竿」的意思。
The actor passed away at a very young age, but his great performance set a new benchmark for his peers around the world.
這位演員英年早逝，但他的表演為全世界的演員立下標竿。Shakespeare’s works are considered a benchmark in English literature.
莎士比亞的作品被視為英國文學的標準。
edible (n.) 可食用的；適宜食用的
edible 為形容詞，表示「可食用的」，其名詞型為 edibility，表「可食用性」；而「可飲用的；適於飲用的」是 potable。補充：eatable 表示「可下嚥的」，通常用來形容不是太美味的食物。
The plastic film is not edible and children might choke on it if it isn’t kept away from them.
這塑膠膜不能食用，若不將其遠離孩童，可能會造成窒息。Tap water is potable in most European countries.
大部分歐洲國家的自來水都是能喝的。
invasive (adj.) 侵入的，侵襲的
此字來自動詞 invade (侵犯)，名詞形為 invasion。「侵入某人隱私」即 invade sb.’s privacy
Asking a colleague how much they make is considered an invasive question.
詢問同事薪水是個侵犯隱私的問題。Don’t invade other people’s privacy by asking questions about their personal lives.
別在別人背後議論紛紛，侵犯他人隱私。
phase sth. out (phr.) 逐步淘汰…；分階段停止使用…
phase 當動詞時就是「逐步進行」的意思，作為名詞則表「階段，時期」。反義片語為 phase in，即「逐步採用；分階段實施」。
The old machines in the factory will be phased out sooner or later.
這工廠裡的老舊機器遲早會被逐漸淘汰。The company is phasing in artificial intelligence for robot design and manufacturing.
該公司正逐漸開始人工智慧機器人的設計與製造。
