be in hot water (get into hot water)
即「陷入困境、惹上麻煩」之意，指因為做了某事而可能遭受批評、懲罰，如水深火熱般難受。
It’s 10 o’clock already! Did you just sneak into your seat? You will be in hot water if you keep showing up late for work.
已經十點了，你剛偷溜進座位嗎？再繼續上班遲到的話，你會惹上麻煩的！

of the first water
可指某物「品質最佳、最上流的」，或是形容某人「最優秀、第一流的」，of + N. 就變成形容詞，修飾 of 前面的名詞。這個說法源自於鑽石貿易，半透明度越高的的鑽石價值越高，也就是越像水的鑽石品質越好，另外還有 second water、third water 的說法，當然指的就是次於 first water 的鑽石。
I assure you that all products made by our factory are of the first water. We don’t charge for poor quality!
我向您保證本工廠的產品都品質極佳，若粗製濫造則免費！
test the water(s)
就是中文說的「試水溫」！test the water(s) 不管有沒有加 s，意思都不變，指在採取進一步的行動前，先探口風，試探別人對某人事物的接受度。但是，為什麼 water 可以加 s 呢？water 一般是代表「水」的概念，為 uncountable noun (不可數名詞)，但如果是特指「某一特定位置的水」，就可加 s，代指湖泊、河川、海洋，或者罐 (杯) 裝水等，例如在餐廳可以說 two waters 表「兩杯水」。
This cosmetics company always tests the waters by giving out free samples to customers before the launch of a new product.
該化妝品公司推出新產品前，先向顧客發放免費試用品來試水溫。
補充：用法同於 water 的例子還有 hair(s)、food(s)、fruit(s) 等，這些名詞只要是指「特一種類」，就會加 s。

water down
若照字面上看，是「加水下去」的意思，沒錯，water down 有「加水稀釋 (飲料)」之意，另外還表「弱化、淡化 (觀點等)」，這樣才不會那麼極端，進而讓別人接受觀點。
In the last weekly meeting, Tony watered down his personal perspective before he brought the proposal up to the table.
上禮拜的週會中，Tony 在提出他的企劃書之前先淡化了個人的觀點。
water off a duck’s back
「水從鴨子背上掉落」？成語「水過鴨背」即出自於此，指「(批評或告誡) 對某人來說完全不痛不癢」，如耳邊風。這個典故是由於鴨的羽毛表層含有油脂，所以水無法滲入其中，只要抖一抖羽毛，牠們就好像從沒碰過水一樣。
She was blasted for her bad behavior, but it seems like all the criticism just falls off her like water off a duck’s back.
她因不當行為遭受抨擊，但輿論對她來說似乎如水過鴨背般不痛不癢。

「橋下的水」指的就是「過眼雲煙、陳年往事」，如同橋下的水奔流入海，讓人釋懷、不再介意了，通常指原本關係緊張兩人，決定放下過去，冰釋前嫌，有種 Let bygones be bygones. (讓過去成為往事) 的意味。
After the break-up between my best friend Lily and I two years ago, my heart was really torn apart. Fortunately, we became friends again lately. It’s all water under the bridge.
自從我最好的朋友 Lily 兩年前和我絕交後，我真的傷心欲絕。幸好我們現在合好了，一切都冰釋前嫌。
keep one’s head above water
字面上的意思是「讓頭維持在水面上」，由於英文裡很喜歡用 drowning (溺水) 的意象來代表「困境、麻煩」，因此 keep one’s head above water 引申為「勉強度日」之意，通常指經濟上的困境 。
“Dare to dream” is a quote we hear every day, but in reality, lots of people are struggling to keep their head above water, let alone dreaming big.
「勇於作夢」是每天都聽得到的引文，但現實是許多人都只能勉強溫飽，更不用說胸懷大志了。
補充： be in deep water 即「深陷困境」。
其實英文裡有關水的意象非常多，在此只收錄最常用的 7 組俚語而已。看來水不僅是生存必備條件，更是日常生活中必學的知識！
