在此場演說中，貝佐斯強調「天賦」和「選擇」的差別，他指出聰明是種天賦、善良則是一種選擇（Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice.），而成為一個善良的人比成為聰明的人更為困難。「我們的選擇塑造了我們的人生」（We are our choices.），我們的性格反映了我們一路上所做的選擇。
