盛大的開幕儀式裡，象徵奧運傳承精神的聖火傳遞可以說是最重要的一個環節，聖火在奧運發源地 (birthplace) 希臘被點燃 (light) 後，經過12000個跑者的傳遞 (pass)，最後抵達里約馬拉卡納體育場 Maracanã Stadium，在八月五日當天點燃奧運火爐 (cauldron) 。
