先來看看最常用的 broken，這個詞有時也可以用 out of order 替換。
The elevator was broken so we had to take the stairs.
= The elevator was out of order so we had to take the stairs.
電梯壞了，所以我們只好爬樓梯。
英文俚語﹕從麵包店剛出爐的 (English Slang: fresh from the bakery!)

go bad/spoil 食物壞掉
go bad 直譯就是壞掉；spoil 當動詞時是破壞的意思，食物變質壞掉則可以說 The food is spoilt.
My boyfriend and I planned to cook at home but all the vegetable had gone bad so we ate out.
我和男友原本打算下廚卻發現蔬菜都壞了，最後只好外食。I think the soup is spoilt. It tastes funny.
我覺得這道湯壞掉了，吃起來怪怪的。

turn sour 食物酸掉
想明確表達食物「臭酸」了就可以用這個片語。
Lisa forgot to put the milk in the refrigerator so it turned sour.
Lisa 忘了把牛奶放進冰箱所以它酸掉了。
torn 衣服破掉
Eric didn’t realize that his t-shirt was torn. It was so embarrassing!
Eric 的衣服破了但他自己不知道，超尷尬的！
burn 燈泡燒掉
The lightbulb burned and suddenly the whole room was in complete darkness.
燈泡突然燒掉之後整個房間陷入黑暗。
電子用品類
crash 當機
電腦當機可別說 broken，這樣別人會以為是電腦摔壞或破損！
My computer crashed in the middle of the video conference and my boss was not happy about it.
我的電腦在開視訊會議時當機了，老闆對此很生氣。
crash/quit unexpectedly 應用程式閃退
有時候手機容量不足或是和 app 不相容就會有「閃退」問題，此時可以用 crash，
quit unexpectedly 則是蘋果公司的官方用法。
This schedule app keeps crashing. I cannot use it.
這個行事曆 app 一直閃退，我沒辦法用。
skip 跳針
這個詞用在 CD 、唱片等等一直跳針的情況。
The record Tom bought in the store kept skipping, so he asked for a return.
Tom 在這家店買的唱片會跳針，所以他要求退貨。
汽車類
breakdown / break down 拋錨
Brandon’s car broke down when he was driving on the highway. All he could do was to wait for the tow truck.
Brandon 的車拋錨在高速公路上，所以他只能等待拖吊車救援。
have a flat tire / (tire) blow out
My tire blew out on my way to work, so I missed the presentation.
到公司的路上我的車子爆胎了，所以我錯過了簡報。
