雛菊、玫瑰與紫羅蘭
各種不同的花都有各自的象徵意義
英文中也有不少和花草植物有關的俚語

1. Rose 玫瑰
coming up roses 漸入佳境；進展順利
coming up roses 源自於1950年代的一齣百老匯音樂劇 Gypsy: A Musical Fable，劇中的其中一首歌就叫做 Everything’s Coming up Roses，這句話的涵義也是源自於歌詞，表示事情「漸入佳境、進展順利」。
They encountered a lot of difficulties at the beginning of the project, but now it’s coming up roses.
他們在計畫一開始的時候遇到許多困難，但現在已經漸入佳境了。
not a bed of roses 不盡如人意
bed of roses 指的是舒適、安逸的狀態，表示事事順心，相反用法就是 not a bed of roses， 用來形容事情不盡如人意、不完全稱心，也可以說 not all roses。
You know, life is not a bed of roses. Things just don’t always go as planned.
你知道，人生總會有不如意的時候，事情不會每次都照著我們的計畫走。
2. Daisy 雛菊
fresh as a daisy 精神飽滿；容光煥發
fresh as a daisy 字面上的意思是「像雛菊一樣新鮮」，這句話用來形容人看起來「精神飽滿、容光煥發」。不過為何是雛菊，而不是其他種類的花呢？據說這是因為雛菊是一種會「睡覺」的花，晚上的時候雛菊的花瓣會合起來，白天的時候再打開。既然懂得睡覺，精神當然會很好啦！順帶一提，daisy 這個名字就是從 day’s eye 演變而來的。
Annie was exhausted after she came back from her business trip, but she became as fresh as a daisy after a good night sleep .
安妮出差回來後筋疲力竭，但好好睡了一晚之後她就變得精神飽滿。
pushing up the daisies 死；一命嗚呼
pushing up the daisies 是一種委婉的表達方式，意思和 dead 一樣。這句話的由來眾說紛紜，有一個說法是人入土後就成了養分，讓植物花草生長；而雛菊很容易生長，在墓地經常可以看到雛菊，因此有了 pushing up the daisies 這個俚語。
Some say that human will all move to another planet in the future, but I’ll probably be pushing up the daisies long before it happens.
有人說人類在未來會全部移居到另一個星球，但在那種事發生之前我大概早就一命嗚呼了。
3. Violet 紫羅蘭
shrinking violet 害羞靦腆的人
shrinking violet 字面上的意思是「縮小的紫羅蘭」，實際上的意思是「害羞靦腆的人」。有人說這句話源自英國，因為英國人認為紫羅蘭是種低調的花，它們生長在接近地面的地方，常常隱藏在樹葉灌木之中，因此給人謙虛的感覺，加上 shrinking 意思就變成了害羞的人。這句話通常會反過來講，也就是 no shrinking violet，用來形容人毫不羞怯。
Jennifer is no shrinking violet. She feels completely at ease when speaking on the stage.
珍妮佛完全不是會害羞的人，她在台上講話時感覺相當自在。
4. bud 花蕾
nip in the bud 防患未然
nip 是掐或捏的意思，還是花蕾（花苞）的時候就被掐掉了，表示一件事情還沒有機會發展成型就被阻止了，所以 nip in the bud 就是「防患未然」的意思，通常用在負面的事情上。
Cancers are hard to cure, but most of them can be nipped in the bud if they are detected in the early stage.
要治好癌症很困難，但大部分的癌症若能在早期診斷出來都可以及時治癒。
