4. You are not my only employee.

6. I don’t care what your priorities are. This is you new priority.

9. This is the way we’ve always done it.

10. In this economy, you’re lucky to have a job.

(Are You a Good Boss or a Bad Boss?)

(Just in case you need a little preparation practice.)

1. Sounds like a personal problem.

(O) I am aware that an adjustment of my hours is a personal request. Nevertheless, I have always done the best I could, and worked overtime when everyone else needed time off, or extra help with their projects. Even if I am not going to physically be at the office as much, I will still keep myself updated, communicate with my team, and finish my work on time.

(X) If you don’t want to hear anything personal, then maybe you can stop telling stories of how amazing you were in your previous jobs, and brag about your car. And by the way, the last time you had a personal problem, we had to reschedule three extremely important meetings, apologize to everyone, and almost lost our biggest client.

2. I’ll take it under advisement.

(O) Thank you for saying that. We really appreciate your consideration. Nevertheless, I must express the urgency or reorganizing our online data bank. Because it hasn’t been correctly updated for a few years, the disorganization is causing confusion and delays, especially to the new employees, who might question our professionalism.

(X) Well, that’s what you said the last three times we brought up this problem, and it’s obvious that “taking it under advisement” is your code for “I have no clue how important an updated data bank is, and I don’t care.” If you keep on disregarding our suggestions and requests, the overall efficiency of the company will keep deteriorating, and no one will be motivated to keep on contributing.

3. If you don’t want the job, I’ll find someone else who does.

(O) I understand that you want to find an ideal person to fulfill these tasks, and I want to prove I am that person. If you regret that you hired me, maybe you can be more specific about how I can make improvements. If you really need to find someone else, I believe it is your responsibility as the manager to follow the correct procedures.

(X) I don’t want this job because of passive-aggressive people like you. You can keep on looking, and hiring new people, but no one will last, because any intelligent, and competent person will only make you more insecure, obnoxious, and hostile.

4. I don’t care what your priorities are – this is your new priority.

(O) I understand this new project is extremely important, but I was already working on a few others tasks that you also told me are very important. Please either reassign them to other people, or let me complete them before giving me more work.

(X) You are the one who told me what my priorities are. Now you are telling me to drop everything to work on a totally different assignment. It obvious that, by the time I am done with this extremely important new project, you will tell me to fulfill my other responsibilities, so you don’t have to do anything.

5. I don’t make the rules. I just enforce them.

(O) I understand you need to perform your duties as the supervisor. But some the rules were made with exceptions of special circumstances. Perhaps if I bring up my issues with human resources, they will be happy to communicate with me, and find the best solution for the situation.

(X) Yes, we all know you didn’t make the rules, because they were made years before any of us started working here. If all the rules are meant to be enforced one hundred percent, regardless how the circumstance has changed, then a monkey can do your job, and the last thing we need around here is a puppet that only cares about the next promotion.
