出國旅行，迷路時該怎麼問路？Language of Traveling 旅行用語：
lost：迷路了
found：找到了
ask for directions：問路
give directions：指引方向
turn left：左轉
turn right：右轉
make a left turn：一個左轉彎
make a right turn：一個右轉彎
keep going：繼續往前
go straight：直走
go forward：往前
go uphill：走上坡
go downhill：下坡路
wrong way：錯誤的方向
the opposite direction：相反的方向
go back：回去
turn back：回頭
intersection：路口
crossroad：十字路口
directly across：正對面
opposite of：相對的
diagonally across：斜對面
on the other side：在另外一邊
on the opposite side, and a few doors down：在對面再過去一點
plaza：廣場
square：廣場
town square：城鎮廣場
downtown：市中心
fine arts museum：美術博物館
MOMA (Museum of Modern Art)：現代藝術博物館

1. 走在馬路上的人上坡或下坡不會搞錯
People walking on the sidewalk always know if they are going uphill or downhill
舊金山的聯合廣場是當地的地標。在中國城吃過飯，走一走就到了。如果已經去過了，想像一下你會如何指導觀光客方向，讓他們順利的找到購物聖地。不要忘記告知方向時要仔細，不要說「你一定會找到」或則「沒有人找不到」。也可以考慮如何講最簡單。有的人可能找東南西北要半天，可是如果你說往上坡或者往下坡他不可能搞錯。
Can you please tell me where is Union Square?
請你告訴我聯合廣場在哪裡？
(O) Stay on Stockton Street. Keep on walking downhill for about 10 minutes. You will pass the Grand Hyatt Hotel, then the plaza will be on your right side.
順著市德頓街繼續往下坡走大概10分鐘。你會經過君悅酒店，然後廣場就在你的右邊。(X) You want to go south for about half a mile, keep going if you see the Hyatt. The plaza is huge. You cannot miss it.
你往南邊走了大約半英里， 如果看到了君悅酒店繼續走。廣場很大，你不可能錯過它的。
2. Drivers want to hear specific directions
駕駛希望聽到具體的指令
如果是給開車的人方向，想像一下如果你是駕駛，需要知道什麼路線最方便與安全。如果對方是在找一個很大的地標的某一個入口，也告訴他要找哪一條路才可以找到他的目標。
Do you know how to get to the west entrance of the university?
你知道我怎麼找到大學的西邊入口嗎？
(O) Stay in the right lane, take the University Avenue exit, then follow the signs to Oxford Street. Oxford Street is adjacent to the west side of the university.
留在右車道，在大學大道出口下高速公路，然後按照指示牌到牛津街，牛津街就是大學的西側。(X) Just follow the signs to the university, and look for Oxford Street after you get off the freeway.
只要按照指示牌找到大學，下了高速公路後找牛津街就好了。
3. Advise if a major landmark is coming up!
告知明顯的地標要出現了！
很多地標當地人都很熟悉，可是沒有看過的人可能完全不知道你在說什麼。像是要去台北101的人你不能告訴他去找一個巨大的 ”LOVE” 地標就好了。紐約有一支很有名華爾街銅牛 (Charging Bull)，可是有的人不知道。如果要幫助別人然順利的找到附近的商店，最好講清楚。
Can you tell me how to get to this restaurant. I have the address right here.
你能告訴我怎麼找到這家餐廳，我有地址。
(O) Yes, I know this place. Stay on Broadway Avenue, stop when you see a big metal statue of a bull. The bull is a landmark. The restaurant is on the opposite side of the statue.
我知道這個店。留在百老匯大道，當你看到一個公牛銅像時停止。銅牛是地標，餐廳就在雕像的對面。(X) Keep going until you see the bull. The restaurant is right where the bull is.
一直走，直到你看到一只公牛。餐廳就在牛那邊。
4. Identify nearby establishments with details
仔細標識附近的商店
很多繁華的地帶有複雜小巷子，所以最好建議找路的人留在大馬路上。如果目標附近有很明顯的商店，花幾秒鐘形容一下，對方就不可能搞錯了。
What’s the best way to get to the fine arts museum?
去美術館有最好的路線嗎？
(O) You want to turn left at the next major intersection. The museum is diagonally across from a 3-storey Starbucks. But I am afraid today is Monday, and most museums are closed.
你在下一個大馬路十字路口左轉。博物館在一個3層樓的星巴克斜對面。但是今天是星期一，恐怕大多數博物館都休息了。(X) Turn left when at the next light, then cross the street again when you see a coffee shop.
在下一個紅綠燈左轉，然後再過馬路，走到你看到一個咖啡館。
5. Don’t be vague 不要含糊
如果要跨越一個大城市，最好與最安全的路線通常都是地鐵。如果你只知道地鐵的路線與資訊，其他的就不要講太多。協助對方到達最理想的地鐵站，他有常識的話，一定會順利找到下一步。如果你知道有免費的接駁車，當然也要順便告訴他。
Where is the Moscone Center?
Moscone 會展中心在哪裡？
(O) It’s on the other side of town. You can take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport), which is the subway, to the Powell Street Station. Then some of the buses can take you there. Or ask the station agent where the shuttle stops. The shuttle is a free service that will take you directly to the convention center.
在城市的另一邊。你可以坐地鐵到的跑華街站。有些公車可以送你去。或問地鐵站的代理人員接駁車在哪裡停。接駁車是免費的服務，會直接送你到會展中心。(X) It’s way too far to walk. You will have to take the BART, then transfer again. And don’t call a cab. It will cost you a fortune.
走路太遠了。你需要搭捷運，然後再轉車。不要叫計程車，會貴到不行 。
6. Be considerate of others’ safety 體諒他人的安全
有的城市的公車是24小時的。可是晚上的公車班次時間上有很大的差距。如果看到旅行的人單獨坐公車，不要忘記建議他們留意一下時間表。
Do you know if the bus will be running after 10pm?
你是否知道公車晚上10點後還會運行？
(O) Yes, the buses operate until midnight. But you might want to take note of the schedule, so you don’t have to wait for too long.
是的，公車營運到晚上12點。但你可能要注意一下時間表，這樣你就不必等待太久。(X) I am not sure. Probably, I see the buses running at all hours.
我不知道。可能吧。我從早到晚都看到公車在馬路上跑。
7. Don’t repetitively use words that have multiple meanings
不要重複使用有不同意義的字
最後的提醒是英文的 “right” 可能是「右邊」，也可能是「正確」的意思。如果路線已經包括了右轉，可是你不確定，不要在問 “right or wrong” 了。簡單的換一下詞語，說 “correct or incorrect” 來清晰的表達，讓自己與與你對話的人都可以搞清楚狀況。
(O) I am a bit lost. On the map, it looks like this bed and breakfast that I am trying to find is not on a major street. An older lady at the bus stop wanted to help, and she told me to turn right when I see the supermarket, then immediately turn another right, is that correct?
我有一點迷路了。這個名宿在在地圖上看起不是在一條主要街道上。在公共汽車站一位老太太想幫忙，叫我向右轉，看到超市在馬上再右轉，這樣是正確的嗎？(X) I can’t believe this stupid map. It looks like this bed and breakfast doesn’t even exist. An old lady told me to turn right, then again, but I don’t think she knew what she was talking about, and I am probably right.
我不能相信這個愚蠢的地圖。這個名宿看起根本不存在。一位老太太告訴我，右轉，然後再一次。但我認為她搞錯了，我可能是對的（與右邊是同義字）。
