Taiwanese labor unions staged a protest march on May 1 in downtown Taipei to fight for their rights.
五一勞動節全台多個勞工團體為爭取權利集結台北市街頭。
They appealed to the government for shorter working hours, no overwork, pay raises, and a ban on dispatch workers.
他們向政府提出四個訴求：縮工時、反過勞、要加薪、禁派遣。
The workers criticized that politicians were only good at giving “guava checks“, which means they always make promises they can’t keep.
勞工們痛批政客猛開芭樂票，卻往往無法兌現。
【小知識】
guava checks ＝ bad checks
中文所為「芭樂票」，其實就是指空頭支票，用芭樂（台語發音）意思有點「看得到卻吃不到」的嘲諷。

「抗議」相關英文用法
protest 抗議
談到抗議我們最常用的單字就是protest，它可作名詞和動詞。作名詞時為可數，前面可加上許多搭配詞，以下列舉幾個常用的動詞搭配字：
make a protest 提出抗議
stage/hold a protest 舉行抗議
organize a protest 組織抗議
join/participate in a protest 加入抗議
e.g.
Mandy has great passion for social movement, so she will definitely join the protest this Saturday.
Mandy對社會運動抱持熱情，所以她一定會參加這週六的抗議活動。
protest若當動詞使用時，通常後面會加上“against”，表明抗議的對象是誰。
e.g.
In 1960’s, many Americans protested against the Vietnam War.
在1960年代，多數美國人反越戰。

be against / opposite to 反對
against是一個介系詞，意指「反對或不認同」，而opposite則通常作形容詞， 指「相對的、對立的」。
e.g.
He can’t accept any opinion opposite to his.
他無法接受任何與他對立的意見。
strike 罷工
strike可作名詞或動詞，它的意思很多元，在工作用語解釋為罷工，常見用法為：
strike for 為了…罷工
e.g.
The workers struck for the right to get fair payment.
勞工們為求公平薪資而罷工。
go on strike 參與罷工 ＊注意！！go on strike不加冠詞“a”！小心不要犯錯了！
e.g.
They went on strike to express their dissatisfaction of their working environment.
他們用罷工表達對工作環境的不滿。
hunger strike 絕食抗議
這裡的strike用法其實跟罷工相似，絕食抗議就是以斷食方式拒絕工作，所以英文稱hunger strike。
e.g.
The minority group went on a hunger strike to raise the public’s awareness.
這個弱勢團體以絕食抗議引起大眾的注意。
一個人絕食算什麼，當有一群人陪你一起絕食，
那就會是一個大事件。
sit in 靜坐
靜坐一種非暴力的抗議行為，英文從字面上解釋就是「坐著(sit)＋在某地(in)」，小編都是這樣記這個字，是不是很好會意呢？名詞用法就是加上”-“，寫作sit-in。
e.g.
Students gathered in front of the President Office and sat in all night.
學生聚集在總統府前靜坐整夜。
